Coming Home to Broken Pipes Emergency Flood Water Damage Clean Up Repair Treasure Valley Boise Idaho
What if the pipe breaks while you´re away?
Has this ever happened to you? You´re on vacation for a week of rest and relaxation. Everything is going well and you head for home a little bummed it all has to end. You turn the key in the lock of your front door and as it opens, water rushes out to greet you. Everywhere you look there is water and wet belongings. The house smells musty and wet. Your first step is onto saturated carpet and the first thing you hear is a bubbling sound from the kitchen: whatever has caused this mess is still going strong.
What should you do when you come home to a flood?
Flooded homes can be a huge mess to clean and the damage can spread and perpetuate if you aren´t careful. You´re first impulse is to immediately begin grabbing valuables and protecting them. Then, you´ll want the water out as soon as possible. But more than just a big mess, floods can be extremely hazardous. Emergency water damage clean up requires caution. The steps you take upon discovery must be calculated and calm. Remember: the first priority is your safety.
1. Turn the water off: you´ve got to understand where the source of water is coming from. Common sources include the washing machine, dishwasher, and toilet. It may be much safer to find the main supply valve to your home and turn all the water off. This is usually on the house near the crawl access or under the stairs. If you can´t find it, go to the meter at the street and find labeled valve. It may or may not be safe to walk through the flood waters to the broken pipe.
2. You must be mindful of what you are standing in! Is the water clean or was the flood from a sewer back up? There is a strong shock hazard with home floods. If the water is contaminated or too deep for you to deal with pumping out on your own, you should immediately call a flood damage expert.
3. Evaluate how extensive the flood damage is. Is it contained to one room? Most people then try to do one of two things:
• Get a shop vac and start sucking the water out, OR
• Begin to move important items out of the way
You should only attempt to vacuum the water out if the amount is appropriate for that method. There are some floods that are simply too deep for the caliber of shop vacuum most homeowners have access to use.
4. Stay calm. Your personal safety and that of your family has to come first. Look for items to protect that can´t be replaced and don´t worry about the rest: most of it can be replaced or dried. Remember that slips and falls are the number one hazard with floods. Don´t put yourself at risk: call a flood damage expert who can help.
